The Hermiston School District is accepting name submissions this month for the new elementary school to be constructed beginning in 2021 on Theater Lane.
The elementary school is one of several construction projects funded through the bond approved by voters in November. It will be the sixth Hermiston elementary school, joining Desert View, Highland Hills, Rocky Heights, Sunset, and West Park.
An online survey conducted through May will collect potential names for the Board of Education to review before selecting finalists. The public will then have an opportunity to vote on the final name for the school.
Hermiston School District board policy requires that the school be named for:
- its location or community
- a famous American
- a local resident who has not been active with the community or schools for at least five years
Other names may be recommended along with supporting justification.
“By opening the process up to the public, we expect to find names that are truly representative of Hermiston’s diversity and creativity,” said Hermiston School District Superintendent Tricia Mooney.
“Each school is a fundamental part of this community, and it’s important that the community is connected to each school.”
